No cochlear implant needed

January 24, 2011

We went to the park yesterday.  It was six above, clear blue skies mixed with dark gray clouds.  It was really a beautiful day.  Cold, but beautiful.

On the frozen ground my boots went, Squeak.   Squeak.   Squeak.   Squeak.  Next to me Diane’s boots went  SQUEAK!  SQUEAK!  SQUEAK!  SQUEAK!  From Diane’s perspective, it was just the opposite.  But either way we were making a lot of noise.  Every now and then we stopped so Diane could take a picture.   When we stopped the silence was astonishing.  There was hardly any breeze, so no wind noise.  From a distance of thirty yards left and thirty yards straight down we could hardly hear the creek tinkling over the rocks and ice.  Even the crow was quiet, which is a true rarity.  We reached a point in our walk where we would stop, not so much to take a picture as to just listen to the quiet for a moment.

In the hustle of the season (playoff season) and the business of life (watching the playoffs), with all the noises surrounding us (the playoffs in hi-def) we need to remember to stop and listen.  And not just to the wandering warbling watercourse weaving its way through the rocks and ice in the nearby ravine.  But listening to God.  And the funny thing is, we don’t need any special skill set, other than to be quiet, to get quiet once in a while.  We don’t need an advanced degree, enhanced hearing, or elevated status to hear what he has to say.

All we have to do is stop and listen.  So even if you are in the midst of something wonderful (like a playoff game) take time to hear from the One who loves you most.

So I think I’ll shut up now.
