How will they recognize him?

December 23, 2010

John 1:9,10   “The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.”  (NIV)

So how do you suppose they finally recognized him?  How will they recognize him today?  I think there are at least three things that Jesus did that allowed people to recognize who he was – the Light of the world.

1.  Jesus spoke and acted with the authority he was given. Matthew 9:8 “When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man.”

2. Jesus spoke and acted with power.  Luke 4:36 “All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!”

3.  Jesus spoke and acted with love.   Luke 6:35 “But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.”

So Jesus was recognized because he lived a life of authority and power, but unlike many in power, he loved.   If you read the great commission, recorded in Matthew 28 and Mark 16 you will see that Jesus gives his followers his authority, and his power. In many places throughout the Gospels Jesus tells us that we can do the same miracles he did, and more! and when we read the book of Acts we see that played out – sorry, lived out – through the lives of Peter and the other apostles.  So we know that it is true.

All we have to add to those  gifts, in order to shine  in the darkness and allow the world to recognize him, IS LOVE! I know, it sounds like the silly song we used to sing, They will know we are Christians by our love. It’s true.  Jesus gives us power and authority over demons and the powers of this world. He gives us all the power and authority we need to live an effective life that matters. So how, we can make a true difference in our homes, in our neighborhoods, in our community, in our world? We live a life of love!  1 John 3:16 says, ” This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.

That is how they will recognize him.
