Sweet, peaceful dreams…

December 6, 2010

Away in a Manger was originally published in 1885 in a Lutheran Sunday school book, but it was not  written by Martin Luther.

Probably among the first Christmas songs most of us learn, it is one of those that actually sound better when sung softly.  Peacefully.  Do you want your children to quiet down for the night?   It gets harder and harder as the 25th approaches.  Try turning off the TV and singing a couple of quiet and peaceful Christmas songs.  Silent Night works, I’ll mentions some others as the week progresses.  But for a great quiet closer, nothing beats Away In A Manger for setting the peaceful bedtime mood, while at the same time helping your children focus on the real Christmas story for a minute or two.

Away in a manger,
No crib for His bed
The little Lord Jesus
Laid down His sweet head

The stars in the bright sky
Looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay

You could even sing this as you are putting up your crèche.  (Manger Scene)

The cattle are lowing
The poor Baby wakes
But little Lord Jesus
No crying He makes

I love Thee, Lord Jesus
Look down from the sky
And stay by my side,
‘Til morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus,
I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever
And love me I pray

Bless all the dear children
In Thy tender care
And take us to heaven
To live with Thee there

This song makes a great bedtime prayer.
