Good deed doers

April 26, 2010

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.(Romans 12:21)

This is such a hopeful verse.  Sometimes evil seems to be everywhere.  It seems like only evil, never good, gets media attention.  It seems like movies about evil (There I go on that subject again) outnumber movies about good by a three-to-one-margin.  Even thinking about it brings it to the surface, and makes it visible everywhere.

But we are reminded.  Don’t be over come.  Evil has been defeated on the cross of Christ.  Have hope.  High hope!  Jesus said, “don’t be afraid.” repeadely in the New Testament, and I am sure he said it a lot more often than it was recorded.  Do not be afraid.  Do not be overcome.

And we are to a part of the redemptive process.  Not only can we avoid evil, not only can we not be over come by evil, we can over come evil with good.

Sometimes we wonder, “why bother?”  We bother because by bothering we are overcoming.  By bothering we may pull someone from the brink, restore hope in a tough situation, shine the light of Christ into a dark place.  Like the Wizard of Oz says, “Back where I come from there are men who do nothing all day but good deeds. They are called phila… er, phila… er, yes, er, Good Deed Doers.”

We can and do make a difference when we make the concscious choice to overcome evil with good.  Good thoughts, good actions, and good living.  Our good deeds will not get us into heaven, but they may help somone else make the wise choice.  And they will give the enemy a fight.

I’m up for a fight, are you?
