Three suggestions from God.

April 21, 2010

Here are three suggestions from God that I felt arrogant enough to expand upon.

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. (Romans 12:12)

Are you hopeful?  Do you believe better days are on their way?  Do you trust God no matter what?  Do you go beyond saying, “I hope so.” to actually believing so?

Then be joyful.  The same God who has allowed you to be where you are right now is the God of hope. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13)

Are you in the middle of something that could easily be called an affliction?  Maybe you or a loved one is sick.  Or tired.  Or scared.  Maybe you job is unsure (or gone, or given to someone else).  Maybe someone you trust has set you up.  Maybe you are in trouble because of your faith.  There are a thousand afflictions you could be suffering, some because of your faith, some because of your human condition.  Know that God is still in the midst.  As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be laughtered.”No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.  For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.  (Romans 8:36-39) And patiently wait for him to act on your behalf.

The easiest part of this verse-yet often the most neglected-is prayer.  In the middle of the good, the bad, and the ugly, we can pray, and gain what we need to get through.

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. (Philippians 1:9-11)
