American Idols

November 16, 2009

My wife has this great little basket. Its about 6 inches across and 8 inches high. It is shaped and colored exactly like a giant Hershey’s Kiss. She set it on a table and surrounded it with hundreds of real Hershey’s Kisses. (There are no longer hundreds there.)

Maybe it because I have been reading the Old Testament stories about little g gods and idols, but it looks to me just like the little kisses are worshiping at the idol of the Big Kiss. “Coacosugarmilk, cocaosugarmilk…” they repeat in the hopes of appeasing their benevolent deity.

You probably don’t have any Asherah Poles or sacred stones in your house, no alters or idols. But do you have anything that is between you and God? Anything in the way of serving him with all your heart? A young man came to Jesus, looking for justification. Actually looking closely it looked like he was looking for something to buy that would get him into heaven. “Jesus responded, ‘If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’ When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. ” (Matthew 19)

For this young man, his wealth was in the way, for some, poverty creates just as big a barrier. The point is, we need to be on our guard so that nothing gets in the way. Not the big things like jobs and possessions; but also not the little things. If we place too much importance on it, even something as small as a kiss can get in the way.

Deuteronomy 6:5 (NIV) “Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”Skyline Drive - Shenndoh 05-08 085
