Let go!

September 26, 2009

I was sitting in a very bad place the other day (Coldstone Creamery). I watched as a family came in with a little girl about four-years-old. She was holding tight to her mothers hand, or maybe her mother was holding tight to hers. At first glance the little girl looked calm and happy, but on closer examination of her face, she looked anything but calm. her eyes radiated excitement and anticipation; they barely disguised the rumble under the surface. I’m sure if you had hooked her up to a seismometer she would have easily registered a 7.4. Sure enough, as soon as mom let go of her hand she began to bounce, then dance, then twirl with excitement. It was time for ice cream!!!

So…when was the last time you let go? When was the last time you danced with joy, or even just bounced around a bit? What are you holding on to that is keeping you from the joy you were made to experience??

II Samuel tells the story of David embarrassing his wife because he danced with wild abandon before God. “David, wearing a linen ephod, danced before the LORD with all his might, while he and the entire house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of trumpets.”

I believe that usually what we are holding onto are the very things God calls us to let go of. The burdens of life are keeping us from dancing. Jesus promises to give us rest when we lay our burdens at his feet. And after we have rested, then we can dance.

So let go, and dance.
