every step you take

Remember the song by Sting, I’ll be Watching You?   “Evey move you make, every step you take, I’ll be watching you.”

Remember Sting?  Anyway it’s a good song for parents to remember.  Chapter 21 in 30 Ways in 30 Days to Save Your Family is titled, Set the example. Our kids are watching everything we do.  If we want them to grow up wise, thoughtful, caring people who turn to God and the Bible for answers, we need to be people of the Word.

The good news is our kids are watching us! Even if they act like they don’t care, they do.  We can use these opportunities to build character without nagging them.  They will see that it works and will copy, sometimes without even knowing it.

Hagelin offers a few suggestions on page 200 and 201.  I’ll cover a few now and a few later on.

  • Always model honesty and truth
  • Speak up when you see or hear something wrong
  • Let your kids see you reading good material
  • Show good sportsmanship
  • Be a good listener

Of course, if these things come naturally,  just keep doing them.   If this in not your “norm” ask your self why not- then ask yourself, do you want your children to follow your example?  If any of these five items are an area of concern, spend the next few hours thinking and praying for guidance.  Just thinking about doing these things will get you moving in the right direction.  The start doing, and your kids will notice.  And they will like it.  And they will follow you.
