Are you a bridge or a lighthouse?

July 2, 2009

DSCN0975Are you a bridge or a lighthouse?  One is not necessarily better than the other.  But if you are a bridge you won’t make a very good lighthouse, and vise-versa.

Lighthouses are signals of approaching danger.  You can see and hear them from a long way off.  They help you find your way at night.  I have some friends who are light houses.  Sometimes they give warning of things to come; sometimes they are a strong reliable guide in the darkness.  They keep an eye out for danger and another eye out for friends in need.  I am grateful for my lighthouse friends.  You know who you are.

Bridges, on the other hand allow us to rise above obstacles.  The carry us over the fray.  Most, the best ones, stand as firm as a lighthouse, but their task is completely different.  Although both help us complete our journey, the bridge spans potential danger rather than simply warn of it.  A bridge friend  takes us to another place, a bridge friend connects, a bridge friend lifts us.  I am thankful for my bridge friends.

Jesus, of course is a bridge.

I’m thankful, during the storms of life, for both bridges and lighthouses. I am thankful during the sun shinny days for these people as well.  It’s in the sunshine we can really see what they are made of.

So which are you- a bridge or a lighthouse?
